What is Sydney U3A?

U3A stands for the University of the Third Age. Sydney U3A organises life long learning for retired and semi-retired people in a friendly yet stimulating environment.  Its aim is to provide mental and intellectual stimulation in a  group situation to keep the mind young and alert.

Sydney U3A Inc members attend 300 courses in 40 topics held throughout the Sydney metropolitan area and in the city. It is divided into 7 regions and each member of Sydney U3A  is able to attend any of the classes throughout the Sydney area.

The range of courses enables our members to broaden their horizons, be involved in new learning experiences and to share their skills and knowledge in such fields as art, languages, music, history, life sciences, philosophy, computing, crafts, photography and walking. No qualifications are required and none are given.

Course Leaders are drawn from member ranks who volunteer their time and knowledge. They are retired teachers, academics, business people or those with an expertise in or an enthusiasm for a particular subject.

The teachers learn and the learners teach.

How to join the U3A in your area:

U3A membership is not related to a specific age but to a period in one’s life (the third age) after the second age of full-time employment and parental responsibility.  Anybody in their third age can join U3A and this includes people who are working part time.  There is no lower age for membership.

To find a U3A local to you, use the Find a U3A Group page. Download the spreadsheet and enter your post code and it will tell you your area. Alternatively, download this handy table and simply look up your post code. You can then download the Membership Application Form and send it to the address on the page.

If you have difficulty with any of this or would rather find out more about the U3a or need help, please contact the National office. Click here for our contacts page. Alternatively, just give us a call on 9252 2033 between the hours of 10:00am and 1:00pm Monday to Friday.

Your first year's membership fee is just $55.  Thereafter it is $45 per annum.   The only cost you’ll have after that is maybe fifty cents to a dollar for morning tea plus a small amount for materials in some courses.
