 Writing Stories Group

I am the leader of the Writing Stories Group which meets at the St Ives Uniting Church every second Wednesday. It’s a biggish group – mainly ladies, but we do have three much valued men.

The Group is a very happy group who love to get together and share stories and gossip. Some people write stories from their lives, as they think back over life and family. Other stories are not true, but are made up from imagination. Or maybe put together using ideas from people and things that happen – but twisting them around to make ‘fiction’.

Members of this group have become friends and look forward to getting together to share something they have always wanted to do – to write.

The first time someone reads their story to the group they always feel nervous and very exposed, but we’ve all been there and accept every person’s work as a gift given in trust. We hold it as it is unwrapped, know it is precious, and admire the achievement.

Some interesting "life eperience" submissions from this small group

Jeanie Pollard -- This might fill a niche:

Many Years ago, when people used to dance and sing at parties, my

husband and I made a 30 minute tape of songs of the day

interspersed with dances such as 'Knees Up Mother Brown' and the

'Okey Kokey' as we Poms pronounced it, for a New Years Eve Party

held by a friend. We added the must have 'Auld Lang Syne' at the

end of the tape to be played when the clock struck midnight.

Soon after the last guest arrived, Vera, our hostess, announced

a sing song and dance session to help break the ice. She put on the

tape, and while we ate and drank, we sang and danced.

Unfortunately, I was in the kitchen with Vera preparing more food,

when the tape was left to run on to the end.

What a shock for her to find, at only 9pm, her guests were leaving,

calling their goodbyes as they trotted off to their cars. We managed

to hold back a few dawdlers, but somehow the party had lost its bite!

Whenever I hear 'Auld Lang Syne' now, I think not of the beginning

of a new year, but  the dying of Vera's party!
